The new Toyota TNGA platform will benefit the 2016 Prius in a big way. The platform, TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture platform), is being completely overhauled and will offer numerous enhancements not only to the upcoming Prius, but other models down the line.
With a lighter, compact, and more efficient blueprint, the TNGA platform will be capable of raising hybrid efficiency by more than 15 percent. If indeed that holds true, the 2016 Prius will be able to return nearly 58 mph combined – 59 mpg city and 55 mpg highway.
In a recent press release, President Akio Toyoda said, “I want 2015 to be a year in which we take steady and bold steps toward sustainable growth. We can do this by launching new models that incorporate TNGA, and making good use of this intentional pause to strengthen our competitiveness.”
